ChamberPAC endorsed candidate for state Supreme Court victorious
Judge Orie Melvin defeats Jack Panella for seat on state's highest court
ChamberPAC, the political arm of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, congratulates Pennsylvania Superior Court Judge Joan Orie Melvin for her election to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
Orie Melvin was ChamberPAC's endorsed candidate. She received about 53.2 percent of the vote, while her challenger, Superior Court Judge Jack Panella, received about 46.8 percent.
Orie Melvin was first elected to Superior Court in 1997, and won a retention vote in 2007. She previously served seven years as a judge on the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas and five years as chief magistrate of the Pittsburgh Municipal Court.
Orie Melvin's state Supreme Court candidacy received a "highly recommended" rating by the Pennsylvania Bar Association.
"Joan Orie Melvin's broad judicial experience and legal ability, combined with her record of community service, make her an excellent choice to continue serving the people of Pennsylvania on the state Supreme Court, as also evidenced by the strong vote of confidence from her peers," said John Callahan, ChamberPAC manager and director of government affairs for the PA Chamber. "The ChamberPAC board was proud to unanimously endorse her candidacy and congratulates her on her victory in Tuesday's election."
