Gov. Corbett signs Chamber members' No. 1 lawsuit abuse reform priority
Fair Share Act will restore balance to Pa.'s legal system
Before a packed Capitol Rotunda and a large media contingent, Gov. Tom Corbett solidified PA Chamber members’ hard-fought efforts to restore fairness to Pennsylvania’s legal system by signing the Fair Share Act into law.
Formerly S.B. 1131, the Fair Share Act repeals the unfair legal doctrine of joint and several liability.
At the ceremonial bill signing, Corbett thanked legislative leaders and the business community for moving the issue forward, and particularly mentioned the PA Chamber’s dedication to ensuring that the legal reform measure made it to his desk.
As the only non-elected official to speak at the event, PA Chamber Vice President Gene Barr praised the work of lawmakers, more than 50 statewide associations, and the governor for advocating tirelessly for a bill that restores fairness and predictability to the state’s legal system, encouraging business investment and job growth.
"This is monumental news for job creators, consumers, doctors, hospitals and local governments," Barr said. “After working with state lawmakers for more than ten years to bring Pennsylvania into the mainstream with regard to financial liability, we are grateful not only that the Legislature has again supported Fair Share Act legislation, but that we have a governor who signed this critical reform measure."
