About The Speaker

Salena Zito

Salena Zito
National Political Reporter, Columnist and Author

Salena Zito joined Washington Examiner in 2016 as a Pittsburgh-based columnist and reporter covering national politics and culture. She is also a weekly columnist at the New York Post, contributes to the Wall Street Journal and co-authored The Great Revolt; Inside the populous coalition reshaping American politics, with Brad Todd.

In 2018 she won first place for her columns in the Associated Press for her coverage of American politics, and is a recipient of the Barbara Olsen Award for Excellence and Independence in Journalism.

She has taught journalism at the Harvard Institute of Politics, Washington and Lee University, and will be teaching at Hillsdale College this fall.

She has interviewed every president, vice-president as well as those who sought their party’s nomination on both sides of the aisle in the 21st Century.

Michael Smerconish

Michael Smerconish
Television and Radio Host, Columnist and Author

Michael Smerconish is the host of a daily radio program heard nationwide on SiriusXM’s POTUS channel. He is also the host of CNN’s “Smerconish,” which airs Saturdays at 9 a.m.

Smerconish was a longtime newspaper columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News and Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer and his columns were routinely re-printed in newspapers all across the country.

He is the author of seven books. He has donated all of the proceeds for four of them to charity. One was a novel, TALK, for which the television rights were optioned by Warner Brothers. His latest book is titled: Clowns to the Left of Me, Jokers to the Right: American Life in Columns.

Smerconish is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Lehigh University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and resides in the Philadelphia suburbs where he and his wife have raised four children.

Gov. Tom Ridge

Governor Tom Ridge
Chairman, Ridge Global and Co-Chair, VoteSafe

As Chairman of Ridge Global, Tom Ridge provides clients with solutions to cyber security, international security and risk management issues.

Following the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, Tom Ridge became the first Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and, on January 24, 2003, became the first Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Tom Ridge was twice elected Governor of Pennsylvania. He served as the state’s 43rd governor from 1995 to 2001. Governor Ridge’s aggressive technology strategy helped fuel the state’s advances in economic development, education, health care and the environment.

He is the Co-Chair of VoteSafe – a cross-partisan coalition of election administrators and organizations that endorse the simple principle that every American has the right to vote safely and securely amidst the pandemic. Additionally, he serves as Chairman of the National Organization on Disability (NOD), as Co-Chairman of the Blue Ribbon Study Panel on Biodefence and serves on the board of the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress and other private and public entities.

He graduated from Harvard with honors. After his first year at Penn State University’s Dickinson School of Law, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star for Valor, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

After returning to Pennsylvania and to Dickinson, he earned his law degree and, later, became one of the first Vietnam combat veterans elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served six terms.

Michael Carney

Michael Carney
SVP of Emerging Issues, U.S. Chamber of Commerce

As senior vice president of emerging issues at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Mike Carney helps America’s business leaders prepare for the future. Through original research and thought-provoking events, the emerging issues team bridges the gap between theory and practice to prepare for the technological, social, and policy changes that are reshaping the world. Carney joined the Foundation after more than two decades as a journalist and consultant. He was a partner at one of the world’s largest communications firms, where he advised corporate executives and government officials in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. He later served as head of public affairs at the Community of Democracies and worked as a consultant in the European Union.

Earlier in his career, Carney was a reporter and editor. At USA Today, he was the lead writer for the newspaper’s breaking news blog, On Deadline. His investigative reporting as a magazine freelancer earned top honors in 2005 and 2006 from the Society of Professional Journalists in Washington.

Carney earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and a master’s from the Missouri School of Journalism. He is currently studying strategy as a graduate student at the University of Oxford.
