Last week, the PA Chamber joined a national coalition of state and local chambers in supporting federal legislation that would establish a single, nationwide data privacy standard.

In a U.S. Chamber-led letter, the PA Chamber and its partners expressed support for H.R. 8413, the SECURE Data Act, and urged the House Committee on Energy and Commerce to advance the bill.

The PA Chamber thanks Congressman John Joyce (PA-13), who led the Energy and Commerce Data Privacy Working Group to gather wide ranging input from stakeholders and craft a consensus bill that protects the privacy and security of Americans’ personal data. The SECURE Data Act is the result.

The proposed legislation would create a consistent national privacy framework to protect consumers while providing businesses with clear, workable compliance standards. The measure builds on privacy frameworks already adopted in 20 states and includes key consumer protections such as data minimization requirements, safeguards for sensitive data, and rights allowing individuals to access, delete, correct, and opt out of data collection.

For employers – particularly small businesses – the legislation addresses challenges tied to a current patchwork of privacy regulations that have created complexity and increased compliance burdens for companies operating across multiple jurisdictions.

By establishing a single federal standard, the SECURE Data Act aims to reduce regulatory confusion, streamline compliance efforts, and support innovation while maintaining strong consumer protections.

The PA Chamber’s support reflects its ongoing commitment to policies that promote clarity, consistency, and competitiveness for businesses of all sizes. The coalition is urging Congress to enact the legislation and move toward a unified approach to data privacy that benefits businesses, consumers, and the broader economy.
