HARRISBURG - Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry President and CEO Gene Barr issued the following statement in response to the recent announcement that work on the Constitution Pipeline project has halted:
“We are dismayed and disheartened that as a direct result of New York’s repeated and deliberate obstruction to infrastructure development of the Constitution Pipeline project developers have announced they will no longer be moving forward. This project, had it been built, would have delivered domestic energy to markets in southern New York state that are sorely lacking affordable supplies of natural gas – in part because Gov. Cuomo has also prevented mineral rights holders in that region from developing their resources. This, combined with the Delaware River Basin Commission’s move to bar natural gas development throughout the entire watershed, has resulted in the state of New York attempting to enact a policy of ‘not in my backyard, and not in yours either’ – to the detriment of workers, ratepayers, businesses and industry throughout Pennsylvania and the region. These types of short-sighted decisions will have a lasting economic impact and will also lead to continued reliance on international energy resources – specifically natural gas from Russia – for the states that are not able to access the abundant domestic resources available.”
The Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry is the state's largest broad-based business association, with its statewide membership comprising businesses of all sizes and across all industry sectors. The PA Chamber is The Statewide Voice of BusinessTM.
