Initiative Aims to Drive Pennsylvania’s Economic Resurgence
HARRISBURG - As the Commonwealth starts to fully re-open and move past the COVID-19 pandemic mitigation measures, the PA Chamber is pleased to present the second phase of its “Bringing PA Back” economic resurgence initiative. The first phase of the initiative focused on the short-term needs of employers operating during the pandemic, by helping businesses navigate challenging and often unpredictable mitigation efforts. The next phase – “Rise to the Challenge” – focuses on creating a framework for Pennsylvania that will promote long-term economic growth and opportunity.
“With the wide-spread distribution of the COVID vaccines and return to a sense of normalcy, we now need to focus on the economic future we envision for our Commonwealth,” said PA Chamber President and CEO Gene Barr. “It is not enough to simply bring Pennsylvania’s economy back to what it was pre-pandemic. We need to seize the opportunity before us to make our state a beacon for innovation and investment. Now is the time for bold and decisive action to harness all of the resources we have to offer and set Pennsylvania on a solid path toward long-term prosperity. The second phase of our ‘Bringing PA Back’ initiative lays the groundwork and creates a road map for achieving these goals.”
Over the past year, the PA Chamber has engaged in extensive conversations with industry stakeholders, business leaders and local chambers to determine what is needed to drive the Commonwealth’s post-pandemic economic recovery. This ongoing dialogue helped to identify three core areas of focus – improving the state’s competitiveness, infrastructure and workforce – all of which are essential to igniting Pennsylvania’s economic renaissance and creating equality of opportunity for every resident.
“As we continue with our recovery statewide, Pennsylvania is in a unique position to build on its rich legacy as a leader of industry and economic prowess,” said PA Chamber Board of Directors Chair and The GIANT Company President Nicholas Bertram. “Now is the time for all sectors – civic, private, and public – to rise to the challenge and accelerate our collective efforts to secure a vibrant future for the Commonwealth and the millions who work and live here. Only by enhancing Pennsylvania’s ability to compete, investing in our workforce, and strengthening our infrastructure will we truly realize the Commonwealth’s full potential and reap the benefits of a dynamic economy, securing our rightful place in the global marketplace.”
Pennsylvania can be a model for what economic recovery should look like. But in order to achieve that distinction, the state must first put in place a forward-thinking, long-term strategy that seeks to capitalize on the Commonwealth’s growth potential. The “Rise to the Challenge” phase will create a guide post for policymakers and elected officials – identifying benchmarks to chart how Pennsylvania ranks compared to other states and where there is opportunity for improvement. This information and data will be compiled into a dashboard with illustrative metrics to chart the state’s progress moving forward. “Rise to the Challenge” will culminate in a dynamic and bold policy agenda that will put Pennsylvania on the path towards long-term economic growth.
