Aerospace & Aviation American Airlines and the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA) have announced a new partnership to develop aspiring aviation maintenance technicians and establish a direct career pathway for qualified graduates of the institute. As part of the agreement, American will provide engagement opportunities with its maintenance professionals to students in PIA’s Aviation Maintenance Technology program. Students in the program will also get to tour the airline’s maintenance facilities, and top students will receive guaranteed interviews for positions with American. The partnership is a natural fit for both PIA and American – which employs more than 700 workers at their maintenance base at Pittsburgh International Airport. The new agreement builds upon an existing relationship between PIA and American, which sponsored the school’s Pittsburgh team at the 2026 Aerospace Maintenance Council Competition. Read more from Blue Sky News. Healthcare Highmark Health has continued to post strong numbers in 2026. In the first six months of the year, revenue increased to $17.5 billion compared to $16.5 billion in 2025. Operating income jumped to $805 million from $121 million, and net income was $2 billion compared to $329 million. Highmark’s health insurance business also showed strong improvement, rebounding from industrywide challenges that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. Highmark Health Plan reported a strong increase in revenue and operating income from 2025, bolstered by utilization of health services. Read more from the Pittsburgh Business Times UPMC has extended its partnership with Pitt Athletics under a new agreement that includes the first-ever jersey patch on a Pitt football uniform, signage at the Victory Heights Sports Performance Center and Arena, which opened earlier this month, and presenting sponsorship of women’s sports at the University of Pittsburgh. “[The partnership] reflects two institutions equally committed to the health and success of our region,” said Allen Greene, director of athletics at Pitt. “We’re equally excited about UPMC becoming the presenting sponsor of women’s sports. It gives our student-athletes a unique platform to work alongside UPMC’s physicians and health care providers in promoting women’s health and wellness across our region.” Read more from the Pittsburgh Business Times Food & Drink This year’s Coolest Thing Made in PA runner-up Denim Coffee is continuing its expansion with two new locations in Central Pennsylvania. The company announced last week it will acquire Prince Street Café locations in Columbia and York. Denim Coffee was founded in 2011 by Matt and Kristin Ramsay, with Tony Diehl joining as a co-owner in 2016. The Chambersburg-based company recently opened its eighth cafe in Harrisburg and owns and operates other locations in Carlisle, Chambersburg, Lancaster, and Mechanicsburg. Financial Services Malvern-based Vanguard Group has agreed to acquire fintech platform Altruist for approximately $4 billion, according reports, as the investment giant expands its push into financial advice. Founded in 2018, Altruist provides custodial and administrative services, along with technology for account opening, portfolio management, billing and reporting, to independent financial advisers. Vanguard reportedly plans to keep Altruist as a stand-alone business, retaining its current leadership and brand while bringing its technology in-house. Read more from the Wall Street Journal Transportation Norfolk Southern and Wabtec have expanded their longstanding partnership with a new deal to modernize 33 DC-traction Evolution Series locomotives. The upgrades will replace existing direct-current electric motors with more efficient alternating-current technology. The companies have converted more than 1,000 locomotives since 2015 through a series of modernization projects. Wabtec will complete the latest conversions at facilities in the United States, with the first upgraded locomotive expected to ship by the end of this month and the remainder rolling out through next year. Norfolk Southern said the investment will improve reliability and efficiency while extending the life of its existing locomotives and supporting dependable service for customers. “This investment will improve reliability, increase efficiency and extend locomotive life, helping us deliver safe, dependable service for customers,” Norfolk Southern Chief Operating Officer Brian Barr said. “Together with Wabtec, we’re continuing to invest in technologies that improve fleet performance and maximize the value of existing assets.” Read more from the Pittsburgh Business Times Maritime Hanwha Philly Shipyard have announced their completion of a fourth National Security Multi-Mission Vessel, the Lone Star State. The vessel is the fourth of five vessels that Hanwha is working to build for the federal government and will be homeported at the Texas A&M Maritime Academy in Galveston, TX, where it will serve as the academy’s primary training ship. “Delivering the LONE STAR STATE is a proud achievement for our shipbuilders, whose skill and dedication brought this important vessel to completion,” David Kim, CEO of Hanwha Philly Shipyard, said. “We are honored to see it begin its service at Texas A&M Maritime Academy, where it will help prepare the next generation of mariners and support our nation when called upon.” Read more from Pennsylvania Business Report.
