Business leaders, educators, policymakers, and students from across Pennsylvania gathered at Rock Lititz’s Academy of Live Technology last week for the PA Chamber’s inaugural Higher Education Summit, a member-driven event focused on highlighting collaboration among the public and private sectors to ensure that students and workers have access to the skills, training, and opportunities needed to succeed in the Commonwealth’s evolving economy. The event’s theme was to better align higher education with industry needs to improve talent pipelines and career opportunities. The summit kicked off with a unique conversation featuring students from the Academy of Live Technology, who shared their experiences with experiential learning opportunities and the hands-on training that is preparing them for careers in the live entertainment and production industries. Notably, the students also played a key role in the event’s setup, assisting with production and demonstrating the real-world skills they’re developing. A series of panel discussions explored how colleges, universities, employers, and industry partners can work together to ensure students graduate with the skills Pennsylvania employers need most. Conversations featured leaders from the construction and healthcare sectors, higher education institutions, and workforce development organizations, all focused on aligning educational pathways with evolving industry demands. Among the featured speakers was Grant Ervin of S&B USA, who emphasized the importance of cultivating curiosity and adaptability in future employees. Ervin highlighted partnerships between employers and institutions, such as Slippery Rock University, that are helping students gain the skills needed to secure quality, family-sustaining careers in Pennsylvania. Panelists also examined emerging approaches to workforce preparation, including microcredentials, adult learning pathways, two- and three-year degree programs, and innovative models for healthcare workforce development. Leaders from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health discussed strategies to address critical workforce shortages while building stronger talent pipelines for the healthcare industry. Another discussion brought together higher education leaders from the University of Pittsburgh and East Stroudsburg University, along with state Senate Majority Policy Committee Chairman Dave Argall (R-Schuylkill) and state House Education Committee Chairman Rep. Pete Schweyer (D-Lehigh) to examine how public policy can better align education and workforce needs. The conversation addressed demographic challenges, affordability and accessibility concerns, and opportunities to ensure Pennsylvania remains an attractive destination for students, workers, and employers. The summit also featured presentations from PASSHE Chancellor Dr. Christopher Fiorentino and Tom Foley, President of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania, who shared insights on the evolving role of higher education in preparing students for successful careers while responding to changing workforce demands. The day concluded with a fireside chat, “Degrees That Deliver: Accountability Through Outcomes,” featuring Kelly McManus, Executive Vice President of Education at Arnold Ventures, and Penn State President Dr. Neeli Bendapudi. Their discussion explored how higher education institutions can respond to the pressures of a changing global economy while preserving their broader educational missions. They talked about what meaningful accountability and value look like for students, how academic programs can better align with workforce demand, and how employers and policymakers can strengthen connections between education and employment opportunities. The PA Chamber thanks Rock Lititz and the Academy of Live Technology for hosting these important discussions and helping showcase innovative models of workforce-focused education.
