Two major investments announced by pharmaceutical giants Merck and GSK are reinforcing Pennsylvania’s position as a leading life sciences hub and highlighting the Commonwealth’s growing ability to attract high-value research, manufacturing, and innovation projects. Merck plans to invest $2.9 billion through 2030, including $550 million for a new ADVANCE facility in West Point and related research and development operations. The expansion will strengthen vaccine manufacturing and drug discovery. GSK is also investing more than $800 million in an Upper Merion Township biopharmaceutical hub integrating manufacturing, research and development, and advanced digital technologies. The project is expected to create more than 300 jobs while retaining about 4,500 existing Pennsylvania positions. The investments build on a broader wave of life sciences growth across Pennsylvania. The state’s sector includes roughly 3,900 companies, supports more than 110,000 jobs and contributes about $73 billion annually to the economy. Recent projects include GSK’s $800 million expansion in Lancaster County, Eli Lilly and Company’s $3.5 billion pharmaceutical manufacturing investment in Lehigh County, and Johnson & Johnson’s more than $1 billion investment in a next-generation cell therapy manufacturing facility in Montgomery County. Together, these projects highlight Pennsylvania’s strength in attracting high-value manufacturing, research and development, and skilled jobs. Maintaining a competitive business climate and investing in workforce and research capabilities will be key to continuing this momentum as Pennsylvania continues to compete with other states for capital investment.
