Senate Passes Bill to Create Independent Energy Office

Last Monday, the PA Senate passed Senate Bill 187, legislation that would establish an Independent Energy Office (IEO) to streamline the state’s energy policy and enhance the management of its diverse energy resources. The bill now moves to the state House of Representatives for further consideration.

The PA Chamber strongly supports the creation of the IEO, recognizing the importance of data-driven, objective analysis to strengthen the state’s energy strategy and competitiveness.

“Energy is a critical driver of Pennsylvania’s economy,” said Amy Brinton, PA Chamber director of government affairs. “The establishment of an Independent Energy Office will allow us to collect and analyze the data needed to make smart energy decisions, improve grid reliability, and secure our place as a global energy leader.”

Sen. Gene Yaw (R-Bradford), who sponsored the bill, highlighted Pennsylvania’s diverse energy portfolio as a key driver of Pennsylvania’s economic strength. “I believe an Independent Energy Office can streamline our approach to responsible energy policy and ensure a more cohesive strategy for managing our vast natural resources,” Yaw said.

The IEO would be modeled after Pennsylvania’s Independent Fiscal Office and provide impartial, nonpartisan analysis and reports on energy policy without advocating for or against any proposed measures. The office would also disclose the methodologies, data sources, and assumptions behind its reports, ensuring transparency and accountability.
