Pennsylvania’s rail network is getting a boost on both the passenger and freight sides, with new investments expected to improve connections for travelers and the businesses that rely on freight rail to move goods. Last week, Amtrak announced its plans to add a second daily round trip connecting Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Philadelphia and New York City later this year. The additional service will give businesses and travelers more flexibility to move between Western Pennsylvania and major economic centers along the route. The Pittsburgh-New York line currently operates once daily, departing Pittsburgh at 7:30 AM and reaching New York City around 5:00 PM. The approximately nine-hour trip also includes stops in Greensburg, Latrobe, Johnstown, Altoona, Harrisburg, and Lancaster. The expansion follows infrastructure improvements undertaken by PennDOT and Norfolk Southern to improve the tracks and stations between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. The upgrades, which are nearly complete, are designed to allow freight and passenger trains to operate more reliably along the corridor. “Ensuring more Pennsylvanians have access to safe and reliable transportation to Western PA will reduce commute times, help connect hundreds of thousands of residents, and boost local economies,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. This expansion of service on the Pennsylvanian will provide key mobility and economic benefits.” The intersection of passenger and freight rail is particularly important for Pennsylvania’s economy. The Commonwealth has more than 5,500 miles of freight rail lines and 65 operating railroads — more than any other state. Businesses across Pennsylvania rely on the network to move raw materials and finished products efficiently, connecting manufacturers, agricultural producers, energy companies, distributors and other businesses to markets throughout the country. PennDOT also recently announced $41 million through the Rail Transportation Assistance Program and Rail Freight Assistance Program for projects to maintain, improve and expand freight rail infrastructure. The department is now accepting applications until Aug. 28. More information is available on PennDOT’s website. The investments illustrate the broader economic value of Pennsylvania’s rail network. Strong passenger connections can improve access to jobs and business centers, while reliable freight infrastructure helps companies move goods and compete in national and global markets. Amtrak reported record ridership of 34.5 million passengers last year and a 20 percent increase in ridership since 2019. The new Pittsburgh-New York service is expected to begin later this year, although PennDOT and Amtrak have not yet released a specific date or schedule for the second train.
